At East Meets West we have yoga classes for all ages, including Prenatal Yoga, Mommy and Me (postnatal) Yoga, Itsy Bitsy Yoga for Tykes (Walking - 4 years), Kids Yoga, and lots of adult yoga classes. The main yoga styles we offer in our adult classes are: Hatha (Anusara style), Kundalini Yoga, and Ashtanga Yoga. These styles are profiled below.
Hatha: Hatha Yoga is what people generally think of when they think of the word "Yoga." It includes in the practice of Asanas, or postures, most of which are performed on a mat. Hatha will lengthen and strengthen your body and release your stress. Hatha 1 is appropriate for beginners. You learn the basic postures and techniques and build a firm foundation for your practice. Hatha 2 and Hatha 3 are more challenging. Mixed level classes are customized by the instructor to a level appropriate for those in attendance. The instructor may describe different ways to perform the same posture.
Kundalini Yoga: This ancient science of self-healing is a dynamic, powerful tool for expanding awareness. Using poses, breathwork, chanting, and meditation, it promotes vitality and health, while it balances the mind and spirit. Kundalini Yoga is based on kriyas (sequenced sets of exercises) that produce specific effects on your body and your energy. The kriyas are designed to strengthen the nerves and glands, and the lymphatic and circulatory systems. Through breathing exercises, the chemistry of the brain is altered to create harmony and peace. The meditations, mantras, and mudras energize meridian points and chakras throughout the body to release reservoirs of energy. Your mind becomes strong and flexible in the face of stress and change. Your inner calm helps you to be more in control of your feelings, to deepen your ability to concentrate, and to increase your self-confidence.
Ashtanga Yoga: Ashtanga involves synchronizing the breath with a progressive series of postures, producing intense internal heat and a purifying sweat that detoxifies the body and calms the mind. Some prior yoga experience or an intermediate to high level of fitness is recommended before taking this class. It is also suggested that newcomers to Ashtanga arrive 10 - 15 minutes early so the instructor can go over the basics before class begins.
